Budget for a Month in Venice, Italy

How Much Does It Cost to Stay in Venice, Italy for a Month?

The budget for a month in Venice, Italy depends on the level of luxury required. We believe that traveling full-time requires a moderate level of comfort. Most people (us included) could not stay in a hostel month after month and continue to travel indefinitely. With that in mind, two people can stay a month in Venice comfortably for less than $4,500. On the other hand, if you require 4-star accommodations and white tablecloth meals, it will cost significantly more.

Where did this number come from? Well, we spent a month in Venice, and I kept a detailed spreadsheet with all our daily expenses. I used this spreadsheet to put together three budgets (low, mid, and high) depending on various requirements. The budgets include a breakdown that will allow you to put together your own estimate based on your needs.

Of course, these budgets assume you live like us and stay in one place for the entire month. If you move around during the month, your budget will go up for the increase in lodging (shorter stays cost more per day) and transportation.

Monthly Budget for Two People in Venice, Italy

There are substantial savings when visiting Venice as a couple or with a friend compared to traveling alone. For example, there are some savings on the grocery bill. It’s more than it would be for one person, but it’s not twice as much. On the other hand, some costs are twice as much. There are rarely discounts on museum tickets or other entertainment in Venice.

If you want to estimate how much it would cost one person to stay a month in Venice, you can make some deductions for Groceries and Dining, Entertainment, Transportation, and International Health Insurance. However, the Lodging and Miscellaneous costs will be about the same for one person as for two.

Lodging

Our centrally located Airbnb in Venice cost $2,600 for a month. I would classify it as mid-range. It had one bedroom, kitchen, washing machine, Wi-Fi, and a small balcony.

Groceries and Dining

Grocery shopping at the small grocery stores, produce markets, butcher shops, and fabulous fish market costs, on average, $30 per day. If you do not drink and plan to cook all your meals at home, you can easily stay on a $900 per month budget.

If you plan to enjoy wine, street food like Cicchetti, and one $100 dinner during the month, a $1,600 budget is appropriate for you. Consider shopping at a local bulk wine shop to lower your wine expenses while enjoying great local wines. Transportation

If you enjoy walking, Venice is accessible on foot and surprisingly easy with the assistance of Google Maps. The ACTV (i.e. water bus) is excellent but can add up and eat your transportation budget. The ACTV offers one-, two-, three-, and seven-day Vaporetto passes, but they are costly. For example, the one-day pass is twenty-five euros.

We walked almost everywhere in Venice and only used the water buses to get from and to the train station with our luggage and for day trips to the outlying islands (Lido, Murano, Burano, and Torcello).

Because Venice is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, lodging prices are significantly higher during the summer than in the winter. While you can visit any time of year on these budgets, you will get much nicer accommodations for your money in the off-season than in the peak summer months.
