We spent the entire month of October in Graz visiting taverns, shops, and wineries around the city and in the nearby countryside. This guide reflects what we learned during that time and includes our recommendations for where to drink and what to try.

Local Wine in Graz
Wine culture is easy to access in Graz. You’ll find glasses of Styrian white wine on nearly every menu, and many bars and taverns carry bottles from small producers in the surrounding countryside. Sauvignon Blanc and Welschriesling are especially common, and most shops also sell wine from South Styria near the Slovenian border.

Styria Wine
Styria is one of Austria’s most important wine-producing regions, especially known for aromatic white wines. Sauvignon Blanc, Gelber Muskateller, and Welschriesling are widely grown, though you’ll also find Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay (Morillon), and Schilcher Rosé in certain areas.

Wineries Near Graz
Many of the best wineries near Graz are located in South Styria (Südsteiermark), about 1–2 hours away by car. This scenic region near the Slovenian border is known for steep vineyards and highly aromatic white wines. Most wineries offer tastings by reservation and sell bottles directly onsite.
