Architecture of Darjiu Fortified Church
Originally built in Romanesque style in the 14th and 15th centuries, the Darjiu Fortified Church was transformed into Gothic style in the latter part of the 15th or 16th century.
Fortifications
Initially constructed as a wooden structure around 1400, the Church was later fortified to protect against invasions. The fortifications reached their final form around 1530. The 5-meter-high walls form a square; their bastions are at an angle and jut out from the walls at all four corners. A similar bastion is found in the middle of the western wall.
The Gothic gates on the southern and the western fronts are defended by porticos with Renaissance-styled tombstones.
In 1788, the walls were modified to include storage spaces for the villagers. Some of these spaces have been converted into museums, while others have recreations of daily life during earlier times.
The Gate Tower
The Gate Tower, located south of the Church, is the fortifications’ oldest and most visible element. The Gate Tower retains its original form, with openings for firing guns that can be closed with wooden shutters.
Rising high above, the Church’s tower offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, allowing visitors to appreciate the beauty of nature and the village from a different perspective.
The tower is open and available to climb. The wooden ladders are very sturdy and well-built. The view of the village and countryside from the top makes the effort worthwhile. Also, there is a good view of the Church and walls from above.
Church Exterior
The Darjiu Fortified Church is a typical hall church with a nave and a choir ending in a polygonal apse. The Church is 28 meters long, 7 meters wide, and 20 meters high.
The exterior of Darjiu Fortified Church leaves a lasting impression on visitors with its fortress-like appearance and intricate architectural details. The Church’s sturdy stone walls evoke a sense of strength and security, showcasing the historical significance of this fortified structure.
The slate roof is from 1760.
Church Interior
The semi-cylindrical rib-vaulted arches, which reach into the nave and the choir, date to the first half of the 16th century. The vaults are supported by corbels that have carved decorations: a pelican with chicks, the sun, the moon, masks, and a symmetrical plowshare. The buttresses date to the same period and are linked by a corbel and little arches that support the battlement.
The Provincial Baroque style ensemble, comprising the pulpit from 1759, the choir of the eastern stand from 1800, and the organ from 1837, feature Unitarian symbols adopted by the Szekler people after 1568.
The Murals
The Church’s interior features a series of Gothic, Italian Renaissance-influenced mural paintings executed by Paul of Ung in 1419. The murals were covered and partially destroyed when the arches were built and later, in the 17th century, when a pulpit was installed. The large mural paintings were rediscovered during a renovation in 1887.
The most detailed is a Conversion of Paul the Apostle that includes the artist’s portrait. There and in The Pursuit of the Cuman, part of a Saint Ladislaus legend group, Paul managed to integrate the subject into the composition’s other elements. Other subjects he painted were the Martyrdom of the Ten Thousand and several saints.
