Although it’s not as picturesque as other churches in Transylvania due to its location next to a busy road, the Saschiz Fortified Church is impressive when it comes to its size.

The Saschiz church was built between 1493 and 1525. The spire standing today was built in the 17th century. It was transformed into a spire in 1677, getting the same decoration and the same kind of roof as the Clock Tower in Sighişoara. In 1830 the roof got its final look.

The “Saschiz model” had been re-created in the construction of the Saxon churches in Cloaşterf, Dupuş and Boz and it had its influence in the fortification of tens of churches built on the east side of the Târnava plateau in the first quarter of the 16th century. It also had a great influence on the construction of other buildings including the church in Dârjiu, for example.

The walls are relatively small and unimposing compared to the walls of the other churches described above. In fact, most of the walls and defensive structures have been dismantled. However, the impressive North Tower with its fine spiral and clock still stands tall.

The highlights of the Saschiz Fortified Church are the church and the clock tower – not the fortified walls.

The large clock tower was reconstructed in the 1800s after the original one was destroyed by fire. The new clock tower is designed to resemble the clock tower in Sighisoara. It has recently undergone renovation in 2020, and it looks stunning.

There are brand new stairs to climb, which lead several levels up to the top of the tower. From there, you can admire the clockwork and the bells on the level above.

The 15th-century fortified church in Saschiz served as a stronghold for the local Saxon community, defending against Ottoman invasions.

The church building strengthened by 22 buttresses feels just as massive as the clock tower. Its fortress-like structure united the community and played a crucial role in their protection. The church building itself is a testament to the region’s craftsmanship and architectural heritage.

In 1878 a lateral stand was built on the western side of the nave, where a new pipe organ was installed. In 1878-1879 the arch of the chorus was replaced with a cylindrical arch and the nave was vaulted with cylindrical vault bearing ceramic decorations. The large balcony provides good views of the interior.

The small town of Saschiz (named Keisd in German) is located on the main road (DN13) between Sighișoara and Brasov. Due to its location on the main road, the Saschiz fortified church is almost impossible to miss.

Saschiz is located only 20 minutes outside of Sighisoara and would be very easy trip by taxi for anyone who wanted to see one of the fortified churches but did not want to rent a car or hire a guide or driver.

If you travel by car, Saschiz is on the main road only 20 km (12 miles) from Sighisoara, 111 km (69 miles) from Sibiu, and 97 km (60 miles) from Brasov.

Besides the Saxon fortified church, the hilltop Saschiz citadel (Cetatea Saschiz) known as the Peasants Fortress or the Refugees’ Fortress is worth mentioning.

It is assumed that the fortress was built by a collective of seven villages – Saschiz, Cloasterf, Archita, Daia, Criz, Diawaldia, and Adamsdorf (the last two no longer exist) beginning in the early decades of the fifteenth century and expanding until the 17th century. If needed, the inhabitants of the villages would have been allowed to shelter in the fortress.

At its peak, the fortress had 6 towers: 4 corners and 2 gates: the Guard Tower (which no longer exists), the Entrance Tower, Priests Tower, Landowners Tower, Powder Tower, and the School Tower – all connected by a walkway around the wall. On the north and south side, dwellings for the refugees were constructed. The fortress was functional until the 20th century.

Currently, the fortress itself is being renovated and therefore closed to visitors for the time being. However, the views over Saschiz makes a drive or walk up the hill worth the effort.
