Trieste Travel Guide: Things to Know Before You Go

We visited Trieste for a month-long stay in November. Its long coastline strongly influences Trieste. Seafood and sailing are prominent parts of the culture.

Trieste also lies in an ideal location on the Gulf of Trieste. At one point, it was the fourth-largest city of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (after Vienna, Budapest, and Prague). In many ways, the city feels more Austrian than Italian.

Trieste is a very livable city with large pedestrian boulevards lined with shops and cafes. Unsurprisingly, the cafe culture is very strong. Although it is a large city, it has a friendly small-town atmosphere.

It’s conveniently located on the train line with easy access to Southern, Western, and Eastern Europe. A couple of hours to Venice, a couple of hours to Ljubljana (the capital of Slovenia), and a couple of hours to any destination on Croatia’s Istrian peninsula – Trieste is located at the crossroads of Western, Eastern, and Southern Europe.

We still have many old towns to explore, so we’re not interested in settling down, but if we had to, Trieste would be on the shortlist.

Below is a guide to our favorite food, wine, and architecture in Trieste, plus some additional travel tips and resources we picked up along the way. We hope this information will inspire you to plan your next trip!

Hotels in Trieste

There are many great places to stay in Trieste. For the best experience, we recommend staying near the Piazza Unita d’ Italia (the castle marker on the map below). Northeast of the castle marker is a great area with historic churches, cafes, the canal, and many restaurants.  Southwest of the castle marker is a beautiful area with older churches and buildings, small shops, restaurants, and cafes.

What Is The Best Time To Visit Trieste?

The best month to visit Trieste depends on what you’re looking for. Do you want the best weather, fewer crowds, or the best value? Following are our suggestions for each.

Weather

The best weather is a personal preference. We find the best weather for exploring a city is around 55° F and sunny. However, this is not ideal weather for the beach or boating activities. The weather in Trieste can be warm during the summer, but it’s not scorching.

Below is a chart showing each month’s average high and low temperatures so you can decide what is best for you.

Trieste Italy Weather Graph

Shoulder Season

The time of the year with good weather and fewer crowds is often called the shoulder season. The shoulder season in Trieste is March, April, October, and November. For many, this is the best time of the year to visit.

Trieste is less popular with tourists than Venice, Florence, or Rome. So, you will find fewer crowds in the shoulder season than in the summer, but the summer is not that bad either.

We spent a month in Trieste in November. The weather was cold and windy on some days but lovely and sunny on others. It is somewhat hit-and-miss. In general, it is a relatively windy destination. This explains the many sailboats in the marina.

Best Value

January and February are good months to visit Trieste for the best value and no crowds. You should expect cold, windy weather and pack accordingly.

Language

Italian – Trieste is a city where English is abundantly spoken. It is at the crossroads of Italy, Austria, Slovenia, and Croatia and English is used as a common language.

Visa

Citizens from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia don’t need a visa to visit Italy if they stay 90 days or less. For more information on visa-free travel in Italy, check out our article on traveling visa-free.

Electricity

Italy’s electrical outlets are Type C, F, and L. They have a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz. Travelers from the United States will need an adapter.

If you have many items to plug in, we recommend a travel power strip with multiple USBs and standard plug-ins. Using a power strip, you will only need one adapter to plug the strip into the wall.

SIM Card

Travelers will want a SIM card for Italy. You can get either a local SIM card or an eSIM card.

To get a local SIM card, you have to find a local cellular service provider, often stand in line for assistance, show your passport, and complete some paperwork. The SIM cards work great, but purchasing them is somewhat inconvenient. This option is best if you need more than 5GB of data.

We use eSIMs exclusively because they can be purchased through an app prior to arrival in a new country and activated when you hit a cell tower in the country. We use Airalo eSIMs. They work great, and I recommend them if you plan to use less than 5 GB of data during your stay or if you need internet immediately on arrival.

Car Rental

The fantastic train system in Italy makes rental cars unnecessary for most destinations. However, rental cars are needed to reach smaller towns and explore the countryside. In addition to the major car rental companies found in the United States, Sixt and Europcar are common throughout Europe. For a comparison of rental car offers from large, international brands and smaller regional brands, we recommend Discover Cars.
