History of Devin Castle

Devin Castle, situated at a strategic location, has been inhabited almost continuously since the Neolithic Age until modern times.

The Celts were the first to occupy Devin from the end of the first century BC and they left behind many remnants of their mature civilization. From the first century AD, the Celts were replaced by a Germanic population that established contact with the Roman Empire.

Devin was highly significant as it was the intersection of the north-south Amber Road and the trade route that followed the River Danube.

The origins of Devin Castle

Devin was first mentioned in written sources in 864 as Dowina in the Annals of Fulda.

During the Great Moravian period, Devin served as a crucial military fortress. Archaeological discoveries from that period include the remains of a church and a small cemetery used by the upper class.

There was probably a stone castle at Devin in the first third of the 13th century.

The last noble family to own the castle was the Palffys, who acquired it in 1635. They did not make any major changes to it, however. In 1932 the Palffys sold Devin Castle to the Czechoslovak Republic for a symbolic 1,000 crowns.
