The Richis Fortified Church is a three-nave design. The nave and the aisles, the choir, and the lateral chapels are cross-vaulted and exhibit keystones decorated with a variety designs.

The sacramental niche in the north wall of the chancel is flanked by square pillars resting on leaf corbels. The upper end is formed by a pointed triangle, crowned by a finial.

The baroque altar is the work of Johann Folbarth from Sighisoara and was erected in 1775. In the center is a wooden sculpture of the Crucified, flanked by John the Baptist and John the Evangelist.

Religious motifs adorn the walls, telling stories of faith and devotion. The richly decorated interior reflects the artistic legacy of the village and adds a touch of beauty and spirituality.

Richis is approximately 35 km (22 miles) west of Sighisoara and about 70 km (44 miles) northeast of Sibiu.

Parking in Richis is available near the fortified church. Visitors can easily find parking spots along the streets or in designated parking lots nearby.

There is no public transportation to Richis.

As with many fortified churches in Transylvania, it is necessary to contact the keyholder to get access to the Richis Fortified Church. Sadly, the keyholder passed away shortly before our visit. Although we could not see the interior, we enjoyed walking around the outside.

There is no ticket office for the Richis Fortified Church.

The village was first documented in 1283. Its name, Richis – rich/wealthy, suggests that back in the day, it was a wealthy Saxon settlement. Before being inhabited, the place was swampy, inhospitable, and taken over by wild birds and animals. In memory of those times, the village’s coat of arms depicts a white heron walking through an infinite pond under a starry night.

Today, Richiş is the village with the greatest cultural diversity in Romania: 12 nationalities in a town inhabited by only 700 people.
