The Alsace wine region, stretching along the Vosges foothills against the Rhine, is distinct among French appellations for its practice of varietal labelling—often identifying the grape on the bottle. The primary grape varietals are:

The vineyards of Alsace begin just outside Strasbourg, placing several wineries within an easy hour’s drive of the city. Visitors can explore family estates, biodynamic producers, and even a historic cellar dating back to the 14th century, all offering tastings that highlight the region’s Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, and Crémant d’Alsace.

A biodynamic pioneer on the Alsace Wine Route, Domaine Achillée operates from a notably sustainable, passive-cellar building constructed of straw and wood. The estate has practiced organic farming for over 20 years and biodynamic methods since 2003, emphasizing spontaneous fermentation with minimal intervention, and hosts tastings, tours, and events in a serene vineyard setting.
