Lübeck Wine

Lübeck’s connection to wine dates back to its role in the Hanseatic League, when the city imported red wine from Bordeaux and aged it in local cellars—a tradition known as Rotspon. Though Lübeck is not a wine-producing region, its wine culture remains visible through historic wine merchants, cellar bars, and restaurants that stock bottles from across Germany and Europe.

Germany’s cool-climate wines—especially Riesling and Müller-Thurgau—come from regions like the Mosel, Rheingau, and Pfalz. Red varietals such as Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) are also common, especially in the southwest. German wines range from dry (trocken) to sweet (süß), and are classified under the Prädikatswein system.

While Lübeck doesn’t produce wine, its merchants offer excellent access to bottles from across the country.

Its relaxed, family-like setting and charming outdoor seating under the Old Town towers make it a favorite for sampling local Rotspon and German varietals.

Adjacent to Manfred Miera’s restaurant on Hüxstraße, this small wine bar stocks over 150 labels, with a strong focus on personal recommendations and deeper storytelling behind each bottle. While Lübeck itself doesn’t have vineyards, several small wineries in Schleswig-Holstein lie within an hour’s drive, making them accessible day-trip destinations for curious travelers. These estates produce cool-climate wines from grapes like Solaris, Johanniter, and Regent—varietals suited to northern Germany’s shorter growing season. Visitors can explore vineyard tours, tasting rooms, and farm cafés, often set in peaceful countryside or historic manor settings. 

Weingut Ingenhof, a pioneering family-run vineyard in Malkwitz (Malente), produces crisp white and sparkling wines from Solaris and other cold-climate grapes. Set among rolling Holstein countryside, visitors can enjoy tastings in the field café and explore the adjacent strawberry farm and vineyards.

Gut Deutsch‑Nienhof, a bio-certified estate near Westensee, offers tours through its vineyards and cellar, with tastings of light, fruit-forward Landwein made sustainably from Solaris, Regent, and other regional grapes. About 50 km (45–50 minutes) southwest of Lübeck, accessible via car through the Kiel region.
