In 1612, the fortress was conquered for the only time in its history due to a lack of water caused by the enemy troops discovering the path leading to a secret spring. To overcome this weakness, a 146-meter-deep well was dug out between 1623 and 1642.

In 1718, the fortress was partially destroyed by a fire, and in 1802, it was damaged by an earthquake.

The fortress was abandoned in 1850 due to the changing political situation and reduction of its defensive role. As a result, it fell into ruin and only one guard remained to ring a bell to announce any fires.

After the communist regime took over Romania, the fortress underwent its first, albeit minimal, restoration from 1955 to 1956.

Between 2000 and 2007, an Italian entrepreneur transformed some of the decaying ruins into a beautiful tourist attraction. However, this was done by destroying and arbitrarily rebuilding parts of the archaeological remains.

In 2008, the Râșnov municipality took back the property and ensured better supervision of the reconstruction work. The ongoing restoration work is focused on safeguarding the fortress for future generations, showcasing dedication to its historical integrity.

Perched on a hill above the town of Rasnov, the fortress offers vantage points of the surroundings. The location provided a tactical advantage during conflicts and allowed communication with nearby towns.

The fortress is protected by steep cliffs that are approximately 150 meters (490 ft) high, making them difficult to climb from the south, west, and north. The northern flank and western corner of the fortress have exterior towers for added defense in the upper area.

Due to its U-shape, the eastern side of the fortress is less protected by natural obstacles and is therefore more vulnerable. To compensate for this, the fortress has the heaviest fortifications in this sector to enhance its defensive capabilities.

The structure is protected by a continuous gallery with two ante forts and seven towers on the eastern, western, and northern sides, while only two towers are on the more abrupt southern side.

Encircling an area of 11,000 square meters, the fortress’s stone walls, originally built for defense, have been restored. The walls are 5 meters (16 ft) high, and the widest part is the South wall, which is 1.5 meters (4.9 ft) thick in some areas.

The fortress consists of two courts. The exterior court is situated in front of the eastern wall, bordered by a fortified wall, and equipped with a square tower. The interior court is an inhabitable area, which has better protection due to walls and towers.

The interior courtyard features narrow stone paths that meander among tile-roofed houses. The ruins of a school, a chapel, and over thirty houses, which were used as shelters by the villagers and for storing their assets, have been preserved inside.

The Number 8 Bus to Rasnov (and Bran Castle) leaves from Peron 2 or Peron 3 at Autogara 2.

The bus will have a sign in the front window with the destination. But, if you want to be extra careful, it can’t hurt to confirm with the bus driver.

The fare to Rasnov is only 5 RON (as of August 2023) and can be purchased from the driver with cash. NOTE: You should tell the driver you are going to Rasnov or he may assume you are going to Bran Castle and charge you the full 13 RON fare.

The bus leaves Autogara 2 every 30 minutes (at the top and bottom of the hour) during the week and every hour on the hour on weekends.

Our bus left promptly at 8:00 and arrived at the Rasnov stop at 8:28. There are several stops along the way, but it doesn’t stop for long.

After exiting the bus, you’ll need to walk toward Piața Unirii in the center of town to find the funicular or trail to Rasnov Fortress.

When you arrive at Piața Unirii, which has an underground parking lot, you have two options to get to the Citadel. You can take a funicular or walk on the trail through the forest. The boarding station for the funicular is located behind the Râșnov House of Culture.

The bus returning to Brasov runs every 30 minutes during the week and every hour on weekends.

The funicular starts running at 9:15 a.m. You can buy a ticket from a small ticket booth near the steps to the funicular.
